About The Y-House Foundation

At age 18, Georgia Retallick started the y-house foundation in 2010 after seeing a TV interview with a young girl younger than herself living in aged care. The most concerning idea of young people being in nursing homes is the rate of deterioration that they face in such an unstimulating environment. After contacting a couple of organisations in this field, it was clear to Georgia that they were all doing small things and trying to help these young people on a small scale; for example rehabilitation or respite centres, or small units of housing for 2-3 people.
When it was noted that there was insufficient government funding in this area and that these people weren't being helped Georgia decided to start her own organisation, but with a difference to the others. The y-house foundation is committed to providing long term housing needs for young people with physical disabilities and limitations, rendering them unable to live alone or outside of aged care. The y-house foundation aims to provide these young people with a vibrant and stimulating ‘home’ environment with people their own age to further enhance their quality of life.
The y-house unlike any other facility will be a place for these young people to go directly after accidents or diagnosis to recover and/or avoid further deterioration. With on-site rehab facilities including gym and pool, providing the necessary tools for a quick recovery physically and a young and vibrant environment providing for a quick emotional recovery, y-house will be the place these young people have been waiting for.
Up until now the y-house foundation has had two major fundraising events. In April of 2011 the foundation held a black and white ball, a sit down dinner for 120 people, raising key awareness and funds for the cause. Most importantly, significant donations of labour and building materials for the construction of the first y-house were made on the night. Most recently, y-house has partnered nationally with Grill’d to promote their local matters campaign, providing support and funds to local community groups and charities. In September y-house joined Grill’d Elsternwick in a charity fundraising weekend where $5 from every burger purchased went directly to the y-house foundation.
Currently waiting on government funding, y-house hopes to be able to begin construction in the next 2 -3 years.
